Maintenance Calls – Learn What Jack Hall’s HVAC Technicians Work On

At Jack Hall Plumbing & Heating, we tell our clients that the top three things they can do to keep their HVAC system running smoothly are maintenance, maintenance, and maintenance. It’s no exaggeration to say that having one of our technicians regularly inspect your HVAC for potential problems is a smart investment that prolongs the system’s longevity.

But what does regular maintenance mean? Jack Hall’s HVAC technicians go through a specific checklist of components that are inspected, cleaned, and tested to ensure peak performance and safety. Below is a quick overview of the jobs we tackle during a regular maintenance call.

Check the Air Filter

Ironically, a well-engineered HVAC system can be compromised by something as inexpensive and easy to change as the air filter. That’s why the filter is always something our techs will always check during a maintenance call and replace if necessary. If you aren’t sure how to change the filter on your own, we’ll give you a quick lesson and let you know what size and brand is a good fit your HVAC.

Inspect, Lubricate Moving Parts

HVAC systems have lots of moving parts that can take a beating over time. Fan blades, motors, and bearings need to be checked to ensure they are in good working order and properly lubricated. If these parts are worn or damaged, replacement is necessary to avoid system failures, and keep the HVAC running optimally and increase lifespan.

Test Refrigerant Levels

Refrigerant circulates through your HVAC’s compressor, condenser, expansion valve, and evaporator, keeping your home at the perfect temperature. Jack Hall’s techs will test and adjust the levels to keep the system operating at peak performance. If levels are low, we’ll troubleshoot to locate possible leaks and come up with a repair plan. Keeping the refrigerant at proper levels extends the life of the unit and helps reduce the chance of expensive repairs.

Clean the Condenser Coil

The condenser coil is located in the outdoor unit of your HVAC system. Because they are outside, it’s not uncommon for condenser coils to get dirty. A standard part of Jack Hall’s maintenance is to clean the coil and the outdoor unit to make sure it’s working properly. If the coil isn’t regularly maintained, the compressor can overheat and eventually completely fail.

Tighten, Examine Electrical Connections

HVAC systems run at high voltage, and a central AC unit can use between 3,000 and 5,000 watts per hour. That’s why it’s critical for technicians to inspect the electrical connections. Loose connections can cause electrical arcing, leading to dangerous system failures and even fires. Jack Hall techs will go over all the connections to make sure they are functioning effectively and safely.

Tackle Quick Fixes

While we are working on maintenance, our techs are also on the lookout for worn parts. Components such as filters, pulleys and belts often need replacing so your HVAC system can be properly maintained. Jack Hall’s service vehicles are well stocked with parts, so technicians can perform quick fixes without having to schedule a follow-up call.

Work Outside the Box

While our HVAC techs are inspecting everything from a unit’s capacitors to the wiring, they are also on alert for any strange smells or sounds that could be red flags. For example, a booming furnace could be from delayed ignition due to dirty burners, or a bad odor from the AC unit could signal mold, a dirty filter, or a clogged drain line.
