If your HVAC system suddenly runs like it has a mind of its own, the culprit could be something as simple as a faulty thermostat. Luckily, compared to most HVAC components, replacing the thermostat is a relatively inexpensive, simple fix. Newer features on the latest thermostats can even make your home more comfortable while improving energy efficiency.
Our technicians at Jack Hall Plumbing & Heating recommend looking for these telltale signs that your thermostat needs repair or replacement.
The System Short Cycles
If your HVAC system turns on and off repeatedly without completing a heating or cooling cycle, it’s short cycling. This means the thermostat isn’t accurately reading the temperature in your house and is prematurely signaling the system to shut off. For reference, most units cycle on for about 15 minutes, then turn off, repeating the cycle three or four times per hour.
Blank or Flashing Screens
A thermostat that’s flashing, blank, or doesn’t trigger the HVAC when you adjust it means you probably need a replacement. If resetting the thermostat doesn’t fix the problem, you may have wiring issues or faulty components. If it’s programmable thermostat and frequently loses its settings, it may indicate an issue with the internal memory. In most cases, replacement is the best option.
Inaccurate Temperature Readings
If the temperature reading on the thermostat is significantly different than the actual room temperature, there’s no way you can maintain a comfortable climate in your home. Incorrect thermostat readings can stem from improper placement, faulty sensors, or damaged components. You can use an indoor thermometer to check if the HVAC thermostat is malfunctioning.
HVAC System Is Unresponsive
When you adjust your thermostat settings, the HVAC system should respond fairly quickly. Generally, you’ll hear some clicking noises quickly followed by the HVAC kicking on. If the unit doesn’t respond to adjustments or continues to run after it reaches the set temperature, it’s likely an issue with the thermostat.
High Energy Bills
There are plenty of potential HVAC issues that can cause energy bills to spike, and a faulty thermostat is high on the list. Because it’s the “brain” of your HVAC system, when the thermostat doesn’t correctly read the temperature or properly start and stop the unit, it overworks the system using more power and driving up the utility bill.
Inconsistent Room Temperatures
When your thermostat functions properly, the temperature should be even throughout the home. If rooms have noticeably different temperatures or there are hot and cold spots, it may be due to a faulty thermostat. Also, a thermostat located near a heat source, such as a sunny window, or in a drafty, cold room, can create incorrect temperature readings. Moving it to a better spot can help resolve the problem.
Your Thermostat is Outdated
Most thermostats last about 10 years before they need replacing. However, new technologies and innovations mean that older models, even if they work perfectly, are obsolete when it comes to functionality. If you have an older thermostat, upgrading to a new digital, programmable thermostat is a good way to boost HVAC energy efficiency and reliability.
